7 Year Contemplation Of My Footprint

Her peerless beauty is without doubt. She is the planets youngest major land mass and at just 16 million years old she is in her element.

As a consequence of her uniqueness, Iceland has seen an exponential growth in tourism in the last decade, bringing essential jobs to a country bankrupted as part of the 2008 financial collapse.  Part of the experience is her remoteness, which necessitates every excited visitor to arrive by plane or cruise ship.  But in doing so each carries with them an unintentional environmental footprint.

Over the years this increase in demand has resulted in a proliferation of new (and sensitively delivered) roads & hotels, shops, paths and barriers.  An exotic array of increasingly impressive and surreal looking vehicles helps visitors explore new venues in different ways in ever more remote outreaches across the island,  spreading the burden and relieving pressure on some of the more famous sites.  Great efforts are made to ensure respectful development and use, including a carbon free electricity system, in what is a most delicate and difficult balancing act.

But as I witness these developments my emotions are torn and the way I "see" this land has changed.  Where once I saw just beauty I increasingly find it impossible to disassociate my love for this most exotic of lands from my global environmental concerns and the increasing recognition that I am in fact a contributor to the anthropotic threat that has resulted in the global climate emergency.  After much contemplation and soul seaching Mog and I have decided to stop running workshops to the land that stole my heart as we wrestle with the footprints we own and encourage.

end of the road

the ants go marching

and still they come

and so it begins

doing all we can
