Blencathra

I just love it when the gods shake icing sugar over the peaks of the hills. Taken from Skiddaw, this shot of Blencathra is typical of a winter Lakeland scene from the top of the hill. It's not so often the day is quite as spectacular as it was on this occasion but I wasn't complaining. If this doesn't make you want to go climb a hill I think I might pack up now!

Filters were used at top and bottom of the frame to balance for the contrasty conditions and I had to wait for some hours before I felt the clouds were in the correct part of the frame. I left it until later in the afternoon before pressing the shutter to allow the sun to drop in the sky and add some warmth to the image but I did not want the shadows to lengthen too far on this occasion and I did want to maintain strong contrast levels to accentuate the different "layers" of the image. The shoot lasted some 7 hours though this was far from the first attempt.
