Ted Leeming and Morag Paterson work in collaboration to produce abstract landscape images which explore the subtle textures, colours and contrasts of nature. Drawing on the natural elements of light, weather, season and movement the images seek to embody soul and atmosphere rather than focusing on tangible detail. Inspired by historical representations of landscape across a wide range of media the artists focus solely on the beauty of reflected light in its purest form. By sublimating background elements and abstracting recognisable detail, the images free the viewer to interpret them in a very personal way, more as one might conventionally respond to a painting than to a photograph.

This work is very much a collaborative venture. The two artists work together to develop ideas from concept through to fruition, with either one eventually capturing the single image that expresses their combined vision. The images are created in the field using innovative camera techniques (rather than by adding special effects in the digital darkroom), using the camera more as a painter’s brush than as a tool for recording a pre-existing image.
